Fr. T. M. Mathews Thykoottathil
Faithful Servant of God | Over 60 Years in Ministry (1941-2025)
Rev. Fr. T.M. Mathew Thykuttathil, a devoted and humble servant of God, was born on May 18th, 1941 as the son of late T.K. Mathew Thykuttathil of Kallissery and Chinnamma Mathew Kochthazhatu, Fr. Mathew responded to the divine call to ministry more than sixty years ago. He began his service as a missionary in the remote, mountainous regions of Kulu-Manali and other underserved areas of North India. He was ordained as a deacon in 1967 and elevated to the sacred priesthood in 1971.
Over the years, Fr. Mathew shepherded eleven parishes, including his beloved home parish, St. Mary’s Knanaya Church in Kallissery. In 1991, he brought his mission to the United States, where he became a foundational figure in building and nurturing the Knanaya Catholic community in Florida. He served faithfully as vicar of St. Mary’s Knanaya Churches in both Tampa and Hollywood, offering spiritual leadership and pastoral care marked by humility, compassion, and dedication.
His ministry extended far beyond parish boundaries. He held several prominent leadership positions, including Vicar General of the North American Knanaya Community, general secretary of the Knanaya Suvishesa Samajam, and President of the Kerala Christian Association of Tampa Bay. His training at the Haggai Institute in Singapore greatly enriched his leadership approach, equipping him to guide communities with wisdom, clarity, and a Christ-centered vision.
Fr. Mathew also played a key role in the early development of the Syriac Orthodox community at St. Athanasius Syriac Orthodox Church in St. Petersburg, Florida, offering pastoral support during its formative years.
In addition to his ecclesiastical roles, Fr. Mathew was deeply committed to social outreach. He founded St. Mary’s Old Age Home, a mission of care and dignity for the elderly, and served significantly at Maruppacha Old Age Home, living out Christ’s command to care for the vulnerable.
His deep ecumenical spirit led him to establish the Union Christian Fellowship in Tampa—a space where Christians from all denominations could gather to worship in unity and fellowship. This ministry remains a vibrant testament to his vision of Christian togetherness.
Fr. Mathew’s life was a living witness to God’s love—marked by tireless service, unwavering faith, and a heart for souls. He touched countless lives, led many to Christ, and mentored generations in the faith. His legacy is one of love, humility, and lasting spiritual impact.
Though our hearts are heavy, we rejoice in the assurance that his soul now rests with the Master he served so faithfully. His life was a beautiful testimony of the Gospel—lived with purpose, conviction, and grace. We loved him dearly, we miss him deeply, but we hold fast to the blessed hope that we will see him again.
Fr. Mathews entered eternal rest peacefully on Tuesday, April 29, 2025, at 6:00 PM in Tampa, Florida, at the age of 83. May his memory be eternal
